How to Care for Your Car’s Transmission

Milad Hassibi June 21, 2018

Although the engine can be considered the heart of your vehicle, your car would go nowhere without the transmission functioning properly. It is important to take proper care of your car’s transmission in order to ensure a long life.

Here are some tips to keep your transmission in tip-top shape:

Change the Transmission Fluid

If you did not know, your car’s transmission needs fluid in order to shift the car properly. A lowA car is parked on a hill with the transmission in park fluid level or old fluid can cause strain on the internal gears in the transmission.

Vehicle manufacturers advise that you only use their brand of transmission fluid, especially in Honda cars.

Not using the correct transmission fluid can actually harm your transmission. If you haven’t already, take a moment to read your cars owners manual.

The owners manual will tell you what type of fluid you will need and how much. The manual will also tell you at what intervals you will need to change the transmission fluid.

Go Through the Gears

If you have a manual transmission, chances are that you are shifting through all the gears regularly. If you drive an automatic, you probably only care about the park, drive, and reverse functions of your transmission.

If you drive an automatic, it’s good practice to shift through all the gears of the transmission. On your transmission shifter, you will see gears named D1 D2 and D3. Sometimes, manufacturers will just write out “Low Gear” as well.

Every month or two, drive your car in the other gears. This will help to ensure that all the gears are used and that their internal seals and gaskets get the fluids it needs.

A lack of transmission use can come back to haunt you in the form of a transmission leak.

Hill Parking

When parking on a hill, most consumers will simply throw their car into park and let the car fall back a little bit into the park. However, this can damage your transmission.

To ensure maximum life when parking on a hill, first put the car into neutral and pull the E-Brake. This alone should be enough to hold the car.

Once the E-brake is engaged and the car is still, place the car in park. This will reduce the amount of pressure on the parking gear to almost 0.
